Phonetics and Phonology Laboratories

The Northwestern University Linguistics Department is a leader in experimental phonetics and laboratory phonology.

The lab complex consists of 6 main areas:

• A speech perception lab in Swift 228 (run by Ann Bradlow)
• A recording studio in Swift 228 (run by Janet Pierrehumbert)
• A speech production lab in Cresap 105 (run by Matt Goldrick.)
• Documents and meeting room in Cresap 101
• General office areas in Swift 309/310 and Cresap 115

Swift 228: Perception Lab

• The Swift 228 collection of computers consists of 5 experiment-running computers in individual booths, arranged as follows:

• Software on these computers includes MS Office 2003 Small Business Edition, Statview, Endnote, SuperlabPro, Inquisit, and Praat.
• All five booth computers have Superlab button boxes and headphones that stay with them. If you are using the Superlab button boxes, you can use the colored key caps. These are stored in the box labeled "Superlab Keycap Kits" in the topmost cabinet opposite the booths.
• Additional headphones and microphones are in the cupboard in Swift 228 and in the bottom right cabinet opposite the booths.

Swift 228: Recording Studio

· The Swift 228 recording studio consists of a double-walled sound-treated booth for high quality speech recording. Equipment includes:

o Two 17-inch Intel Core Duo iMacs, 1.83GHz, 1GB ram each.

o Two MOTU Ultralight external audio interfaces for recording and playback

o Sound Studio 3 audio recording software

o Sony MDR-7506 Studio Monitor Headphones

o Presonus Headphone Amp

o 19-inch Acer widescreen monitor in the recording booth for presenting visuals to the subject

o Marantz PMD 670 flash recorder with a firewire card reader for transferring sound files from PMD 670 to disk

o 1 AKG C420 headset microphones

o Stereo-to-XLR converter for “TriggerWave” application

Cresap 105: Production Lab

• Cresap 105 consists of large booth with recording, response pads, and stimulus presentation equipment located inside. External to the booth is Cylon, a dual-boot (OS 9/OS X) Mac G4 that controls stimulus presentation.
• Stimulus presentation equipment.

o Two flat-screen monitors

o Speakers

o Headphones

• Recording equipment

o Marantz PMD 670 flash recorder

o 2 AKG C420 headset microphones

o Glottograph (stored on top of the booth)

o Stereo-to-XLR converter for “TriggerWave” application

• Response pads

o Keyboard+Mouse

o 2 Superlab button boxes

o Superlab voice key

• A “field recording setup” (1 mic + flash recorder) is stored on top of the cabinets on the north wall.
• Forms, including consent, debriefing, and receipt are stored in the cabinet on the south wall.

Cresap 101: Computing and Presentation Facilities

· Presentations: A ceiling mounted projector with screen, PC laptop and small speakers available for presentations. The remote control for the projector along with a dongle for hooking up Mac laptops is in the rightmost cabinet along the north wall of the room.

· Computing Facilities: Two old Mac computers are available for classroom demonstrations or sound analysis (Praat is installed on both). A new Mac (fisher) is also available; it is used primarily for web design, corpus/database analysis, and simulations.

Swift 309/310: Data Storage and Processing

• The Swift 310 collection of computers consists of:

o Polyglot: a desktop computer whose main purposes are (1) speech database storage and (2) data processing using Matlab and various utilities for adding noise to and leveling stimuli. [NB: Polyglot is currently housed in Swift 228.]

o A portable perception testing setup including a laptop (Cantonese 2), with headphones

Cresap 115: Computing Facilities

• The Cresap 115 collection of computers consists of:

o Dalek: a Mac G4 whose main purposes are (1) data storage (2) data processing (3) simulation (4) corpus/ database processing

o A firewire card reader for transferring sound files from PMD 670 to disk

The desk under Dalek is for storage of SoundLab related consent and subject information forms (lower left hand drawer).
